Lose this, and it`s a nervy game next week. QP 1 nil up through a Dom Thomas goal has currently put ICT in that play off spot

HT. It took us a long time to settle, but based on a solid final 20 minutes, we deserve to be in front. In the second half, we will be playing towards the Cowden end, which is rarely comfortable for us, in my experience.

Brutal first half with little football played. The goal however was a fantastic header by Bene, which was made from a wonderful ball from Allan. That has been the only highlight.

Championship safety. Nothing much else.

We have to empty that forward line and change things for next season. I am losing the will to get up in the middle of the Australian night to watch this rubbish week after week.

I`m starting to think the same, I believe if our whole squad was released tomorrow they`d all get picked up by championship clubs. It`s not the squad it`s the system.

I`ve backed McPake to the hilt this season, he has had a tough time of it with the injury situation, but I guess I need to start looking at it more objectively. The football, since he took over, has been awful. No real entertainment, no urgency, no style. Last seasons title win over inferior teams probably papered over the cracks, even the the football was dull. Grinding out wins over part time teams.

When you see the way Airdrie zip it about, with a tidy but attractive style of attacking football, it really puts us to shame.

He must do better

Delighted we`re safe now. A lot of work needs done in the summer, especially figuring out how to be more potent in attack. Next season should in theory be as wide open a race for the title in a fair while with Livingston coming down.

Yeah formation doesn’t appear to get the best of the players we actually have, but we are totally wedded to it…
Majority of long term signings have shown (again) they’re not that good at this level
We still look like a team that has just met
Not sure what’s going to change next season TBH

Interesting possible outcomes next Friday Queens Park v Airdrie and ICT v Morton.

QP will be praying we can beat Ayr and they take 3 points off Airdrie - and Morton win/draw at Inverness.

ICT can avoid playoffs if QP draw or lose to Airdrie and they draw or beat Morton with appropriate favourable results.

Thankfully we are out of this drama, as are Ayr.

For most part we were second best, with the latter part of the first half the one point we were on top, had a few chances and got the goal.

ICT had more of the ball, but can only remember Mehmet making one save.

Second half after the Todd effort 5 mins or so in that was us as an attacking threat.

ICt missed a pen and were gifted the goal and deserved something, but they are as weak as us in front of goal. Think any other team in the league would have opened us up more and beat us today

But we are safe...and reserve cup winners, and the sun is out..so hooray!

Very happy we got the point and we are now safe !
But like others when we had the injuries I made allowances
But since our injured players came back we still do not look any better
Manager has to take the blame for his tactics and also for some of the recruitment that we are stuck with for next year !
The football played this season has been Absolutely rotten to watch , we get a wee glimpse of football now again and it`s usually when we are chasing the game
Has to be a massive improvement for next year , hopefully and I say hopefully there is a few that can be punted one way or another as they just are not good enough at this level, moan over

I`d resigned myself for 9th at best in February so any outcome better than that will do for now. I agree it was tough to watch like last week but circumstances sometimes dictate how games go.

Looking forward to seeing how the close season plays out.

Those who had less than super games today were not the usual suspects, I would suggest. The amount of passes going astray at vital moments was very much in evidence. Fisher, Hamilton, Edwards and Andrew Tod, when he came on were all suspect. Matty Todd worked hard, as he has done for the past few games but seems to defy the promise so many have expressed for him. However, I did think both teams were as bad as each other.

I personally thought he got caught in possession repeatedly. No way I`m going to hammer him though. Wasn`t the easiest of games to come into after an hour.

Time wasting was absolutely embarrassing. Almost 15 minutes of holding it in the corner and wasting time at throw ins and corners. Regardless of “getting the job done”, people have paid good money to come and watch that pathetic display. Pretty much a full squad to choose from and we’re grinding out draws at home to Queen’s Park and Inverness. Mcpake needs to sort it out in the summer, he won’t get long if we start the same way next year.

Cheers da. He looked good in the reserve final. Same with the Sutherland`s. There`s still places at stake so it`s not like we can chuck them on next weekend. Suspect both QP and ICT will lose and positions will remain the same.

I agree that it was an odd decision to bring Tod on. It was a bleak experience watching that game. I absolutely understand taking the pragmatic approach that McPake has gone for in the last couple of games even if it makes for a grim spectacle so to throw on a young lad who still needs a fair bit of physical development was strange. Here’s hoping the summer brings some astute additions to the Bene, Hamilton, Otoo, Todd, KRH nucleus and we could do well.

For me bringing Todd on shows how little faith he has in either Chalmers or O’Halloran.

I expect QP to comfortably beat Airdrie Reserves and I suspect Inverness will also defeat Morton - they could well end up in the relegation playoffs with a positive goal difference which would be remarkable. It would then be a straight fight between ourselves and Ayr for 5th - regardless of where we finish it’s been a hugely frustrating season with very little entertainment on show.

I noticed late on when we were mucking about wasting time Bene wanted to go up for one of the corners and didn’t look pleased when he was sent back.

For me we look much better with a back 4 but it just felt like McPake wanted Fisher back in the team when he was fit and changed the formation back to accommodate him. And I know most people love Hamilton but he’s an absolute nightmare receiving the ball under any kind of pressure in the middle of the park - with the current squad our strongest 2 in the middle are Otto and Allen - we desperately need new blood in there.

Surely Sutherland deserves a starting place next week? - although it might be a tad embarrassing for McPake if he scores a couple.

Both of which he gave multiple year contracts. Although I agree Chalmers has been overlooked the last few games. Shows mcpake can finally see what everyone else has seen the last few years. MOH is another disaster hardly played and even when fit doesn`t get a look in so another player to warm the bench again next year.

I don`t know what Matty Todd`s role is supposed to be in that formation. More worrying is that I don`t think he does either. He seems to get lost between midfield and attack and doesn`t get involved nearly enough. Hammy had a nightmare today, continually giving the ball away or being caught in possession.

We need to find a more expansive way of playing at home next season. ST renewals may already suffer after this season`s home performances.

Todd`s role was always not to get too many touches and run beyond the strikers to get goals. Worked in League 1 but not sure it wil work going forward. Terrific engine but not sure he has the base skills to be a complete midfielder

We haven’t kicked a ball since half time at Arbroath.

Yet another game where the strikers don’t score and we’re likely to finish the season with our top goalscorer(s) having scored 4 league goals.

Not only are we stuck with a lot of dross for next season, some of the boys who were out injured have struggled since they came back and might not be able to take us much further next season either. If Todd doesn’t score he doesn’t really contribute much else and mcpake needs to change the tactics it’s god awful to watch.

A big summer coming up but I feel 9 games into next season we might have some new personnel but the results and tactics will still have us grinding out draws while never really looking like scoring. Struggling to see how mcpake takes us any higher at this point.

Back to being drenched in my own negativity….

I`m just glad we managed to see it out for the point we needed. I`m not happy at how the game went, but I`m far happier than I`d have been if we were going into the last game still needing a point.

We were probably slightly the weaker of the two sides, but both were pretty poor. Yet again, set up to play that awful short passing rubbish with everyone going out of their way to be as indirect as possible. So many times there seemed to be a simple forward pass on, and our player would delay and turn back. And sometimes we did play it long in the first half, but when we did it was usually because we had played outselves into a tight spot. So, instead of having the chance to play a decent longer ball with time to get it right, it ended up going long purely because we were under pressure and went nowhere.

If you want a player in midfield to play like Joe Chalmers, would it not be more sensible just to play Joe Chalmers, rather than force Chris Hamilton into trying to do that job? He had a bit of a nightmare today, giving the ball away often, but repeatedly forcing him to take it in a tight spot is just mad.

When we really looked in trouble in early February, we changed things a bit and played simpler football. It was better to watch and was more effective. We also changed to a back 4 and generally did OK with that shape. After we managed to get up the league a bit, we`ve reverted to the passy rubbish, usually with the preferred 3-4-2-1 shape. We don`t play that way because of nerves, we play that way because the manager imposes that upon his team. It smacks of wanting to play a style because `it`s the right way to play`, probably with cliched bullshit about `being brave on the ball`.

I wasn`t too fussed about running the clock down at the end, as we really did just need a point. But that indirect passy stuff that we tried to play for most of the game is just utterly horrendous.

I`m glad we`ve survived and at the lowest point it didn`t look like happening. I`d have taken 8th after the 3-0 loss to Queen`s Park, so they`re all due some credit for turning it round. However, I`ve found this a really tough season to watch and really feel I need a long break from it.

It`s all water under the bridge now. The bottom line is we needed a point and we got one. That probably opens up the opportunity to plan for next season. Lots of lessons to learn from this year and with many of the players having cut their teeth now in the championship next year we need to improve with the playoffs being the target. Its going to be a very tough season next year.

Today was more about nerves. Next season we need to be playing with more confidence and impose our play on the opposition. That is what Dundee Utd have done this season and I think that`s what you need in this league.

Dundee utd were the best of a bad bunch. Every team in this league lacked consistency.
Rovers will be kicking themselves.

Next year, we need to be consistent, under mcpake that will be as many clean sheets as possible, with the odd goal to win matches. It won`t be pleasing on the eye, but if we keep mcpake, we have to accept it.

Regarding the pointless passing style of play some have eluded to- this generation of players have had it ingrained in them by coaches from an early age that possession is everything. Barcelona we’re the blueprint and if you want to be good you play like them coz it’s the only way to be good.

Then you have a generation of coaches to whom playing direct is a perceived affront to their coaching abilities.

Combine this with your average Scottish championship player and bobbly Scottish pitches and it’s a perfect recipe for the dross we’ve been watching recently.

It’s a dog eat dog league though with 9 strong teams out of 10 and I’m viewing a mid-table finish as a reasonable success even though it’s been a hard watch.

"QP will be praying we can beat Ayr... [snip] thankfully we are out of this drama, as are Ayr."

Sorry VEE, why would Queens Park be praying we can beat Ayr? As you say, Ayr are safe.

"How did Tod Jr do when he came on?"

I actually thought he started well, Jake89, and had just commented that he was a lot more composed than his old man was then his next action was to misplace a pass. After that he looked a bit lost but I`m not sure he (or anyone watching) knew where he was meant to be playing.

"Hammy had a nightmare today, continually giving the ball away or being caught in possession."

He was all over the shop today wee eck. Someone at half time mentioned to me that he`s still feeling the effects of his head knock earlier in the season? I`d hope that wasn`t the case and he would be kept out the team if he was feeling anything but Hamilton probably just wants to play, especially with Otoo injured.

"So many times there seemed to be a simple forward pass on, and our player would delay and turn back."

Lots to agree with in your post as usual socks, this for me was the frustration - one of our few chances in the first half came when we played a long ball over the top to Ritchie-Hosler who then cut it across for Kane. Ritchie-Hosler barely touched the ball otherwise and often it was because he (or Edwards on the other side) were in acres of space but rather than playing one pass out wide we`d play 3, 4 or more short and slow passes first before finding the man over. Pointless, boring, negative and defeats the purpose of having men out wide to stretch the game.

On the Hamilton/Chalmers point, I agree to an extent - I think we rely a lot on Otoo and with him missing Hamilton had to do the disruption and try to progress things but he isn`t a passer and he isn`t a ball carrier. Allan tried to move it about but is more dynamic than Chalmers but never really got going (albeit he had a superb assist and one other shot later). I do think 4-2-3-1 or even a standard 4-4-2 suits our personnel better but I think he`s trying to keep Benedictus, Fagan-Walcott and Fisher happy and almost forcing himself into playing a 3... in a weird way it would almost be better if we had an injury or two at the back as I think he`s overthinking things in defence.

Bene by far our MVP. Again KRH wasn`t great and I really don`t know where his best position is. He is a midfielder but playing the system we did today doesn`t suit him as we don`t play with width in midfield. When we play him RWB again he struggles to offer any more than anyone else. We have tried MOh at rwb with similar results which is a worry as we have 2 at least winger types who are forced to play out of position.

c'mon the pars

Unless I`ve completely misread the league table and final day fixtures, a Pars win at Somerset Park allows QP a chance to avoid the playoff spot if they can also win/draw against Airdrie - DEPENDING on ICT`s result v Morton of course.

Looks like 4 games out of 5 in this league, this weekend exemplified turgid football. Three no score draws, and one 1-1 draw. Seven teams out of ten failed to score. So maybe we`re not alone in that respect.

Hammy had a shocker yesterday. His touch and control was way off. Unlike him cos he`s been my poty as per his award last week. Whatever system we`ve been playing KRH gets ignored. Matty Todd seems ineffective. When they get on the ball for the moments they do things turn up a gear.

Thought Deniz was brilliant yesterday and anyone attempting to criticize can buzz off to put it politely.

That goal wasn`t his fault at all. Should have been in row Z.

We`re safe. Next step. At least the playoffs next year. We will be the biggest club in the championship next year. Fact.

Ramp up the recruitment and let`s go for it.

Another dire performance, looking to be entertained but once again left wanting.

We seem to be unable to get the ball from the back to the front fast enough, other teams show it how it can be done.

Otoo a big miss today, Hammy really struggled in midfield, KRH was anonymous apart from a burst in the first half, Edwards mind is obviously on other things, Matty doesn`t look fit.

Dundee Utd winning the league, without looking outstanding, big clear out coming there?

One meaningless game to go, thank goodness!

Still finished in a better position than what we all thought 2 months ago!

Positives? We managed the game out, made sure we didn’t lose any late possession or goals.

Mehmet, Bene, Alan.

That’s it.

A very low bar. With pretty much a full and experienced squad, that was dire. I’ll renew my season ticket, but unless the quality of players and play improves, I’ll be much more selective about Saturday afternoons.

They were definitely not chuffed, Westie. In his defence, I think he expected Malachi to just clear it but he really should have come out quickly and gathered it as MFW was shielding the ball for him to do just that.

That was a performance to make your eyes bleed. Fortunately there was a chess tournament going on in Albania that I could watch instead during the boring bits.

It was never going to be pretty – circumstances dictated that – results are treading a fine line between critical and irrelevant. ICT came to disrupt – choosing to play the wrong way, going down very easily to put pressure on the referee and so on, but they were nervous too – quick to play the safe ball back to the keeper or just to boot the ball into the stand.

We seemed indecisive – should we play for the win, or for the draw? Even at the best of times we seem to prioritise not conceding over scoring, and yesterday it seemed worse – not helped by the team selection – it may have seemed good on paper but it wasn’t really clear to me where Moffat and Todd were meant to be playing – nor to them perhaps – several times players went for the same ball early on and Bene took a yellow when forced into mistiming a tackle following one such error. Has he lost half a yard of pace? It wouldn’t be surprising since he’s 32 and suffered a few injuries of late. Also, I’m not sure he gets forward as often, although he did to good effect for the goal – it shows what can happen with a good delivery to the right area gives the attacker a chance to get a run at the ball – we should try that again some time.

We had a few chances in the first half but I think just the one in the second half – Todd hits it too low and too hard – had he lifted it a bit or even mishit it a little it might have gone in. But other than that – nada. Kane looked isolated – I assume Todd or Moffat was meant to help out, but it rarely worked; and as others have said KRH is wasted a little as RWB.

Defensively we looked pretty solid but I wouldn’t blame the keeper for the goal – MFW had time to clear, but waited for the keeper to come – they know Mehmet first instinct is to stay on his line and so they got a chance which they took.

It was a pretty unedifying end, keeping the ball in the corner, but in the end, mission accomplished. But what happens now?

If I were giving McPake his annual appraisal, I’d note that he’d achieved what presumably have been his main objective of not being relegated. But other than that – not so great. Yes, we’ve made progress with Rosyth and the young lads have done well, but not sure how much that is McPake’s doing. Any momentum we had after last year soon dissipated as injury after injury hit. There was a brief respite when we got some players back, but then more injuries and the season has spluttered to a finish. And the football has been dire – the lack of goals and entertainment will put pressure on season ticket sales.

I know it’s easy to criticise from the armchair, and I know that what can work at lower levels won’t necessarily cut it at more rarified altitudes – Wimbledon might have raced through the divisions but where are they now? The little tricks that might work on a Tuesday playing for the reserves might be less successful on the Saturday – see Tod’s cameo appearance.

But I think it’s easy to get seduced by grandiose plans of a footballing “style” or “a vision”, to suggest that it’s not the 1980s – that we need a team for the 2030s, and although it will take a couple of years to develop if we get it right we will be ahead of the game.

I think the problems with this approach are that we are not particularly patient – we will expect a promotion challenge next year, whereas a club like Airdrie may have been content to accept a few years in Tier 3 before getting it right; by the time we get to the 2030s fashions will have changed again; and most importantly, whatever we are trying doesn’t appear to be working. And this is the eternal problem – how soon do you ditch your principles when they take too long to bear fruit?

So there’s a lot of work to be done, not least by the board in speaking to the footballing management team and agreeing a sensible way forward – not just budgets, recruitment and so on, but I’d put “style” on the agenda.

Not sure about them coming to disrupt. I felt they dominated us throughout most of the first half and some of the second and we never at any point were pinning them back as we sometimes do. It was always going to be a tough task to keep that up and thankfully they had no quality up front.
Moffat was about the only 1 capable of getting the ball under control quickly and driving forward at them with a couple of notable exceptions where we managed to get KRH the ball in some space.
For their goal there`s no doubt that Malachi could have got rid but his judgement seemed to be that he had the situation under control enough for Deniz to come and collect. But Deniz doesn`t like to come out and the hesitation was just enough for the lad to nick it. I`d give Malachi 60% of the blame but Deniz could have done much better however his penalty save was very good so we can`t be too critical.
I`d have MFW next season in a heartbeat but I think he`ll have better options than us.

I would have MFW as man of the match. He absolutely strolled it and looked levels above the rest. Would be an incredible bit of business to retain him next season.

I agree though that he shoulders more of the blame at the goal. The guy Pepple who came on for ICT was an absolute unit though, not easy to defend that ball against.

Couldn`t believe it when I saw Hamilton marking Pepple at a corner!

Just watched the highlights and have to agree with you, Jeffrey. I thought Deniz was a bit slow to come for the ball at their goal but Malachi should have cleared the danger straight away when he had the chance.

Play 442. Win three games in a row. Go back to a back three. Only win one more game at Arbroath (just).

Why does Fisher constantly ignore KRH for a pass?
